Squeak the Elk was a resident of Woodland Park , Colorado until October 27, 2000,
when the Colorado Division of Wildlife gave the order to kill her because,
" the cow elk ... could not be returned to a wild herd and jeopardized the safety
of motorists and people living in the area."
Squeak was orphaned as a calf when her mother was killed on a nearby road.
The elk was never caged, but took to hanging out with area residents.
Many described Squeak as friendly. They let her play with their children
and sleep on their porches. In July, dozens attended a birthday party for Squeak.
She was gunned down while wearing her Halloween costume.
Like so many squirrels before her . . .
her trust in humans came with a death sentence.
