BLUE
Controversial 'Dog Hero of the Year'

An Australian Blue heeler of Labelle, FL won
the prestigious award after saving his
85-year-old owner from an alligator last year.
Blue bravely and successfully fought off the
hungry gator after his owner slipped and fell
near the water. Blue received numerous injuries
during the battle but none were life threatening.

The award is given annually by Heinz Pet Products.

Controversy started brewing almost immediately
after the award was granted, as stories began to circulate
about Blue's character. Blue has been criticized for
probably causing his owner to fall in the first place and then,
opportunistically fighting the gator for publicity.

Blue's bad boy reputation is widely known in Labelle, according
to at least 1 other contestant for the award.

"He smokes and chases cars," said Fifi, a poodle mix from Texas
who was a contestant for the award after calling 911 and using
Morse code to the dispatcher while her owner was being robbed at gunpoint.

"We didn't know he smoked when we gave him the award,"
admitted one of the organizers of the award program.
"We feel that being elevated to hero status makes one responsible
for something bigger than one's self.
And we are disappointed that Blue has refused
to discuss his image with us."

"Blue stands to make millions in 2002 from commercial endorsements," she said.
"He could thank us for that by behaving a little more responsibly."
